Bread & Croissants
There are 2 bakeries in the village. The first, and our preferred is Boulangerie Les 3 épis, near the Maison du Peuple. It opens 07:00-12:30 (closed on Wednesday) and if you’re not there before 08:30 most of the good stuff will have gone. Head down the hill to the T-junction with the stop sign and the Pharmacie just 50 metres to the left. Don’t go left but turn right and then very quickly turn left down the hill which takes you down to the old town hall on your right and a small square (sometimes the village has live bands in this space and tables set-up selling beer & local wine). Head another 75 metres up the hill, and the Boulangerie is on the right-hand corner. It’s a 10-minute walk even for the slow.
The second Boulangerie ( open 06.30-13:00 Tuesday to Sunday/ 16:00-18:30 Tuesday to Saturday) (closed Mondays) same route down to the T-Junction, but turn left, pass the Pharmacie and onto the crossroads. Cross over and there is a small parade of shops. The first is the bakery, the second a Butchers with small deli and the last is the tabac (newsagent).
Local Food Shopping
Small farmer market on Tuesday morning, very good oyster & shellfish seller on Thurdays about 16:00
There is a small shop in the village which we use only in emergencies. The owner isn’t the most charming. It’s got the basics, and you pass it as you to go the first Bakery. So pop in, have a look around and know it’s there (if she feels like opening) when you need it. She has a café in the back.
Monday to Saturday 08:00–12:30 16:30–19:30. Sunday 08:00–12:30. Closed Thursday.
Selling local wines and farm produce.
Open 7 days a week de 9h30 - 12h30 and 14h -19h.
Supermarkets
Super U, Roujan: Most of the big French chains are scattered in differing directions. We tend to mostly use the Super U at Roujan. It’s a 15 – 20-minute drive away, passes by the beautiful Chateau Cessan on route and has everything you need including a Bakery on the premises. Coming from the house use Sat-Nav to get to Roujan, go through the centre of the village and the Super U is on the right at you exit the town on the way to Pezenas. Often has the best priced fuel in the area.
Grand Frais, Beziers : This is a fabuous shop. In the spirit of a traditional Hallles, Grand Frais offers high-quality seasonal fruit & vegetables. 800 producers in France supply the shop daily with fresh produce, offering a wide variety of fruit, vegetables, cheeses, a great butcher and an extensive on-site bakery. Lots of natural and organic produce.
InterMarche, Magalas: Not as good as the Super U, but closer. The Intermarche at Magalas is about 10 minutes along the road that connects Laurens with Beziers. Has all the basics, but the quality for fresh produce can be indifferent and the choice is less.
Carrefour, Pezenas: For us too far, and doesn’t offer anything to beat the Super U. Possibly a drop in if you’ve popped into Pezenas for the Saturday market – but otherwise, we’d suggest you stay closer to home. It’s another 15 minutes on from the Super-U, which you pass on route.
